Wow. In this show, pianist Jenny Q Chai uses AI technology developed at IRCAM in Paris to create synesthetic color effects simultaneously generated on the basis of her playing. Now of course, when you talk about synesthesia the first composer who comes to mind is Messiaen, and he's on Chai's program, along with such other echt-French composers as Ravel and Debussy. There'll always be a France, and the program also includes an homage to Ravel by one of those contemporary French composers who, however much they diverge from common practice, still sound identifiably French (a certain plangent pungency in the sound, I'd say), Frederic Durieux. And, not surprisingly, Chai favorite Jaroslaw Kapuściński, who specializes in "intermedia" sound-and-image compositions. This will be an eye-opening (sorry!) performance.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Every neighborhood should have a neighborhood spot as good as LaRina Pastificio & Vino. If only.
