Television would be the greatest post-punk band if it weren't for the rather inconvenient fact that it emerged at the absolute outset of the New York punk movement. It was never clear exactly where Television fit into the CBGB scene of which it was a part, what with its extended solos, lack of pop influences, and utter lack of camp or irony. What was clear was that Television was one of the greatest rock bands not only of its time, but of all time. Great songwriting, great playing, great live performances -- including extended solos that (OF COURSE) aren't on the exalted level of Coltrane, but have something of his questing soul-searching nature -- Television had it all. They were utterly transfixing then, and I'm betting they'll be utterly transfixing now.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Before the show, classic ramen at the Brooklyn branch of the Japanese chain Ichiran. After the show (or before, for that matter), of-the-moment Nicaraguan at Chicha, which does indeed seem to be having its Moment. During the show, usual drill: get drinks at Elsewhere's upstairs (indoor) cocktail lounge, where they're much better than at the bars in the music rooms. The Elsewhere rooftop is worth a visit for the fresh air (for Bushwick) and the views, but the drinks up there are basic. (There's barbecue to be had up there as well.)
