Jim Black is one of the more purely interesting drummers on the NYC jazz scene, with a socko style that incorporates rock influences. On Friday, he's accompanied by the excellent bassist Michael Formanek and Michael's sax-playing son Peter. On Saturday, it's Mazz Swift on violin and the fascinating Sylvie Courvoisier on piano.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Credentialed New Southern at The Ryerson.
