An almost staggeringly well-intentioned initiative (and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible) from the fantastic violinist Jennifer Koh.  The idea is this:  there are active composers who have stable incomes from salaries or grants and other forms of institutional support; and there are active composers who freelance.  Koh approached 21 composers have who stable incomes and asked them each to donate a 30-second micropiece for solo violin; in addition, she asked each of those composers to recommend a freelance composer, each of whom will be paid to compose a 30-second micropiece.  Koh (who is donating her own considerable services) will premiere a few of the resulting works every Saturday at 7:00 PM on Instagram and Facebook live streams; if you don't feel comfortable exposing your personal data to the Evil Empire of Surveillance Capitalism, the shows will then reside on YouTube as videos.  Just beyond great.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT:  Someday we'll be able to go to Newark again (unless you're stuck there now), but for now we can drink the cocktail:  pour 2 oz. Laird's Apple Brandy (preferably the Bonded formula), 1 oz. Vermouth, and 1/4 oz. each of Fernet-Branca and Maraschino into an ice-filled cocktail shaker, stir, and strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
