I've made no secret of my affection for Cuban jazz, and right now pianist/composer David Virelles is at the very tip-top:  a searingly inventive, thoughtful composer with the chops to put his surprising ideas across.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT:  The only problem with an El Malecón is that it'll cause you to open some bottles of Port and Sherry that you'll then have to finish off.  Wait, maybe that isn't a problem.  Pour 1-3/4 oz. white Rum, 1/2 oz. Ruby Port, 2 teaspoons of Oloroso Sherry, 1 oz. lime juice, and 2 teaspoons of superfine sugar (or, let's get real, 1/2 oz. of Simple Syrup), with 3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker.  Shake.  Strain into a Martini glass or coupe with (believe it or not) an ice cube.
