Dog Day Afternoon seemed at the time to be one of the first (relatively) sympathetic presentations of LGBTQ characters in mainstream American cinema (Glen or Glenda was rather outré) — but it was told by people hijacking other people's narrative. The thoughtfully outrageous choreographer/theatermaker Raja Feather Kelly investigates and reexamines the material from a queer perspective, resulting in a fantasia where psychological realism meets pop soap opera — and issues like representation, appropriation, and cultural marginalization and exclusion are explored, all the while interrogating the very (tortured) process by which this piece was made. But most important, this is much more fun than the foregoing rather dry recitation might lead you to expect: fun and thought-provoking.
MAKE A NOTE OF IT: Vietnamese fusion, not quite as good as at the best new Vietnamese Wave places but still worth trying, at Omai.
