A sort of solo cantata from the mighty Tyshawn Sorey, sung (to piano accompaniment) by counter-tenor John Holiday. The text is from an 1870s poem about the plight of young Black men whose content, if not its verbal style, is chillingly contemporary. Sorey is in the middle of a can-do-no-wrong period. Don't miss this.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Black Barrel, a cocktail as bitter as Sorey's piece should make you feel: pour 2 oz. Rye and 1/2 oz. each of Averna Amaro and Amontillado Sherry, with 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, into an Old Fashioned glass over ice. Stir. Garnish with a lemon twist.
