Kazakh-British violinist/electronic soundscaper Galya Bisengalieva's new album Aralkum (treating the cheery topic of the shrinking of what used to be the vast Aral Sea) comes out sounding New Age — but you soon see it's deeper and darker than that, in keeping with its subject (and quite good). Bisengalieva's Kazakh-Brit fellow, artist/filmmaker Sana Serkebaeva, provides the visuals for videos for two tracks from the album.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: They drink tons of vodka in Kazakhstan. I'm not going to generally advocate Vodka cocktails or anything, but: Kamikaze. Pour 1-1/2 oz. Vodka and 1 oz. each of Cointreau and lime juice into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lime wedge. Think of how much better it would be if the base liquor were, let's say, Tequila.
