Jen Shyu is a riveting performer with an absolutely individual musico-theatrical conception. Her mastery of Asian string instruments and Western piano, and of both the classical and jazz idioms, is both complete and unique. We've seen some of these pieces as parts of other projects, mainly dealing with the death of Shyu's father, but this is their first appearance as a fully integrated work for a crack jazz(ish) ensemble. This performance celebrates the release of the recording of this extended piece, in case you're interested in hearing it again (and you will be).

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Bamboo: pour 1-1/2 oz. each of Sherry and dry Vermouth, with 2 dashes each of Angostura and orange bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Express a lemon twist into the drink and then garnish with an olive.
