There are "can a White man sing the blues?" issues with non-Gypsy performers of Gypsy music. But Romanian former child rock star Sanda Weigl's take on Balkan Gypsy music is good the way the early Stones were: the rhythms, while losing all subtlety (I said "good", not "as good"), become more incisive — and the ironic self-awareness Q is through the ceiling. Meaning, it's not anything like as good as the The Real Thing, but it has its compensations. In any event, Weigl has been making an honest woman of herself by jazzing up her style, making it almost into a Balkan Gypsy/jazz/cabaret fusion.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: If you go, you'll be drinking at the venue, obvs. Soak it up at Columbia in Park Slope. At home, have a glass of Palinca — like Slivovitz, but stronger.
