Julia Wolfe’s interpretation of/fantasia on the old English Murder Ballad Cruel Sister (I’m betting Wolfe learned it from Pentagle, too) is striking, to say the least, restoring the utter weirdness that characterizes this material but is too often homogenized out of it. There’s more Wolfe on Brad Lubman and Signal’s program (Tessa Lark guests on violin) — as well as something by Wolfe’s husband Michael Gordon.
