It may not surprise you that in the 1920s the Japanese avant-garde was creating silent films as artfully creepy as anything coming out of Germany, but in a very different way. Here’s an exceedingly rare chance to see this amazing horror classic (although calling it a “horror” movie makes it seem like a genre piece, which it decidedly isn’t) by Teinosuke Kinugasa — with a scenario by Kawabata, no less. Live musical accompaniment by The Flushing Remonstrance, who live for this kind of thing.
