Things sometimes do get better. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, the kind of unswinging, highly intellectualized jazz pianist Dan Tepfer plays kind of sucked. But Tepfer’s fascinating music is kind of great. Hear for yourself.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, lovely neighborhood Italian at Sfoglia. Streaming at home, have a Fumata Bianca: pour in 1/2 oz. Mezcal and 1/2 oz. each of Bianco Vermouth and Suze into a Collins glass over ice. Top with club soda. Express a grapefruit twist into the drink and use as garnish.
