There are various satellite shows all around town — Eddie Henderson at the Harlem Rose Garden at 5:30 Friday evening is mighty tempting — but the main events are the three big concerts at Marcus Garvey Park (FRIDAY and SATURDAY) and Tompkins Square (SUNDAY). My pick of the festival is Friday night’s show, featuring Orrin Evans’s Captain Black Big Band with no less than Bilal (and Lisa Fischer) guesting.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: If you go to either Marcus Garvey Park or the Harlem Rose Garden, it’ll be a good opportunity to see if Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster is still good (let me know!).
