A tribute to the Hard-Bop bassist Wilbur Ware who would have turned 100 on Friday. Always respected, always enjoyable, exceedingly nimble, Ware is perfectly described by the title of a doctoral dissertation written about him: “at once old-timey and avant-garde”. He played on some great Monk albums! This is mainly Listed for Friday night’s shows, led by bass ace Dezron Douglas. Cuz how about Craig Taborn and Dan Weiss filling out the rhythm section? Saturday’s shows are led by Russell Hall, whose popcraft makes this List queasy.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, fancy Austrian at Koloman. Streaming at home, make like Dale DeGroff and have a Whiskey Smash: muddle 3 lemon wedges in a cocktail shaker. Pour in 2 oz. Bourbon and 3/4 oz. Simple Syrup, with 4 mint leaves. Shake. Strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
