La Perla come from Bogota, but they specialize in the (irresistible) percussive music of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. La Banda Chuska live in New York City, but they’re one of many bands reviving (and attempting with varying success to update) the Psychedelic Peruvian Cumbia style of the ‘60s called Chicha (in their case by upping the percentage of ‘60s Peruvian Surf Music in the mix and, unfortunately, slicking it up).
