I can’t remember the last time anyone programmed a complete runthrough of Bartók’s six string quartets in New York City. It’s a journey (you can really hear the composer’s style evolving), and one well worth taking. These are key documents of 20th Century Western music — and rough in a way you don’t think mainstream “classical” music can be: I always think No. 5 sounds like Keith Richards.
