We're not going to see any of Calixto Bieito's penetrating opera productions live in reactionary New York, so let's be grateful that the Pandemic allows us to eavesdrop on the Berlin premiere of his new production of Lohengrin, the last Wagner music-theater piece that even pretended to be a conventional opera. A certain kind of (brain dead) opera fan will be excited about the assumption of the title role by Roberto Alagna (who's been on a career-reviving roll lately). And New Music New Yorkers will be happy to hear that Matthias Pintscher is conducting. But this isn't just for opera fans or even New Music people; and really it's all about Bieito and Wagner.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Swan: pour 1 oz. each of Gin and Cointreau, and 3/4 teaspoon of lime juice, with 1 dash of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
