Jazz-not-jazz composer John McCowen was supposed to write a big band piece to be performed at ISSUE, but Events intervened. So now he's boiled it down to quartet featuring himself on clarinets and three of the most questing jazz-not-jazz musicians in New York. If you want to have an argument with yourself whether this is Jazz or New Music, just don't do it anywhere where I can hear it.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Fall Back: pour 1 oz. each of Rye and Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy, and 1/2 oz. each of sweet Vermouth and Amaro Nonino, with 2 dashes of Peychaud's bitters, into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a lemon twist.
