Loadbang, the incredibly exciting brass/reed/voice quartet, plays an uncharacteristic program that does not include a single commission: they managed to find a whole show's worth of preexisting pieces for their unique configuration. What's more, among the composers are Eve Beglarian — quite probably the single composer who, in her immersion in both pop and classical and her refusal to differentiate, let alone prioritize, between them, most clearly exemplifies what this List is about — and such Oldies But Goodies as Anthony Braxton (who refuses to differentiate between jazz and classical) and Joseph Byrd (who was refusing to differentiate between pop and classical when Eve and I were children), as well as Wandelweisserer Eva-Marie Houben and fresh-as-paint Alex Temple.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Brass Rail: pour 1-2/3 oz. amber Rum, 1/2 oz. each of Bénédictine and lemon juice, and 1/3 oz. rich (2:1 sugar: water) Simple Syrup, with an egg white, into a cocktail shaker WITHOUT ICE. Dry shake. Add shake. Shake some more. Strain into a Nick and Nora glass. Garnish with a flamed orange peel and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.
