The splendid oboist James Austin Smith (with Cory Smythe on piano) plays tribute to the 1970s East German avant-garde, reminding us that there’s more to cultural history than our propaganda permits us to know. They also premiere a piece by the great jazz conceptualist (and that’s not the half of it!) Matana Roberts, who as best as I know was not active in the 1970s East Germany.
