Anthony Davis’s account of Malcolm X is a fabulous opera by anyone’s standards. The music is alternately roiling and swinging, and it cuts deep. Like their model Kronos, I find string quintet (standard quartet plus contrabass) Sybarite5 eclectic to a fault — not every kind of music needs to be adapted to the Western string format. But if they wanna do new pieces by people like David T. Little, Kamala Sankaram (how have I not noticed till now that all the vowels in her name are the same?), Laura Kaminsky, and Curtis Stewart, I’ma wanna listen. (A different program each night.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: There’s a wine-and-cheese reception starting an hour before each show — but I never tire of complaining that, for the high price charged for these concerts, the abominable quality of the wine and the cheese is deplorable. In any event, good burgers at At The Wallace — but most exciting of all, I’ve heard it reported on good authority that the fried cheese curds are as good as in Wisconsin.

Zachary Woolfe complains in the The Times that Florencia en el Amazonas has Puccini’s melodies and harmonies without Puccini’s dramatic/emotional thrust. Well, the reason I can enjoy Florencia and can’t abide Puccini is precisely that lack of infantilizing emotional manipulation and constant overwrought melodramaticization. For once, you can enjoy those melodies and harmonies (advanced when Puccinni employed them, retrogressive when Catán did, sure) without feeling overborne and without feeling that the whole enterprise is basically stupid. Hear for yourself.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2023
7:30 PM
Skirball Center, NYU
566 Laguardia Place, Greenwich Village, Manhattan
$41
TICKETS + INFORMATION
The “artist lectures” created by visual artist Suzanne Bocanegra should never work. They’re theatricalized talks, using props and other visual media, given by Bocanegra through the medium of an actor who repeats words fed to them through an earpiece by Bocanegra, sitting on the side of the stage. What’s weird is that they turn out to be fascinating, compelling: a seemingly bad idea gone right. Bocanegra continues her retrospective of these pieces at Skirball this season with one of the first ones (maybe the very first?) and one of the very best, performed by the estimable Paul Lazar. It can only be a coincidence that the title evokes Ladurie.

One of the first shows that you could actually Go Out! to back in the days of The Lockdown (although it's not quite "live"). Gelsey Bell, that vocal star of NYC Alt Classical, has conceived of a piece that walks you around Green-Wood Cemetery (starting at the Sunset Park Entrance). You download the soundtrack on your phone beforehand (the Times complains about how hard it is to download from Bandcamp to an iPhone — trust me: if I can figure out how to do it, anyone can). Bell wrote the text and narrates, with a co-composing assist from the inimitable Joe White (whose terrific new album you really ought to hear). The Cemetery itself will do the performing. (You can also listen to the soundtrack at home and pretend you're walking around the Cemetery.)
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: The Sunset Park entrance is only a short walk from Hometown BBQ Industry City (if you go over the weekend, you can get the fabulous pastrami).

What do you know? The New York Phil has gone and renamed Ellen Reid’s SOUNDWALK. Reid, one of the more soundscapey (and certainly one of the best) of today's many excellent young composers, put together a highly allusive soundtrack, played by members of the Philharmonic and a bunch of Alt Classical players about town. This walk isn't guided: you download an app that triggers sounds sent to your earphones from various cells around the Park as you wander. So you can do it over many times. (Speaking of wandering around Central Park, here's something that I, for one, never knew.)

New York Philharmonic
David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center

$91-$275
TICKETS + INFORMATION
The stunningly cosmic Atmosphères was the first Ligeti many of us heard, in its memorable place on the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey. You can see how in theory Holst’s The Planets could be thought to go with it, given the two pieces’ emphasis on tone color and the connotations Kubrick bestowed on the Ligeti — even though the best you can say for The Planets, as for most British holdover Late Romantic, is that it’s nice to bathe in if you’re in the mood to overlook how fundamentally stupid it is (which is why all those ‘70s Prog Rockers adapted it). As for Julia Perry’s Stabat Mater (which I guess they figured they might as well play since they already had a chorus around for The Planets): grab every chance you can to hear the music of this scandalously overlooked (for the usual reasons) composer, whose transition from sprightly Neoclassical to a still-sprightly form of Modernism this excellent piece is the fulcrum of. And the lush (I mean her voice; I have no idea what her drinking habits are) mezzo J’Nai Bridges will handle to solo vocal part!

Anthony Davis’s account of Malcolm X is a fabulous opera by anyone’s standards. The music is alternately roiling and swinging, and it cuts deep. And how lucky for Davis that one of the great American writers is his cousin, happy to supply a libretto. This production is directed by Robert O’Hara: perhaps the best possible choice.

I was staying once in the Medina of Marakkesh, hanging out on the rooftop of my hotel. Some Gnawi were visiting another guest, and they played their sintars late into the night, inviting me to join their party. Now you can be entranced, too.

Composer Michael J. Schumacher differs from most of the others in Brooklyn — and from the deeply held beliefs of This List — by respecting boundaries and refusing to transgress them rather than denying they exist in the first place. So in this recital, he as creator has conceived of and treated the notated and semi-notated solo piano pieces that Vicky Chow will play differently from the piano/electronics pieces he will play with Chow. He once said he thinks that way because the circumstances and audiences for the different kinds of performances are different. I wonder what he thinks will change during intermission?

Last week the Cassatts played Ossining, where one of them lives. Dare we guess that another of them lives in this lovely coop? They reprise Victoria Bond’s really good quartet Blue and Green Music. The opera I ever saw by Daniel Catán was Rappaccini’s Daughter at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I was surprised. Here was this contemporary composer (he had just recently died) who wrote beautifully in a gorgeous Common-Practice ideom that could be appreciated by just about anyone and who was, moreover, one of those born opera composers, able to use music to express things in an unhackeyed way and also able to keep things moving. And then I saw this magical work. People are going to be surprised at how much they end up enjoying this Magical Realist opera. Amidst an installation by Jacolby Satterwhite (who’s pretty great himself) multidisciplinary musical performances will occur. Tonight is a double bill. I always found Lafawandah’s devotional Arabic Electropop insipid. Electronic popster Nightfeelings is banal.

I don’t usually List fundraisers priced substantially higher than what the producing organization usually charges. Not that I begrudge NFPs’ attempts to raise money, God knows. But the value in the higher prices usually lies in supporting the organization rather than in the show itself, and I don’t feel it’s This List’s place to recommend that. Free Jazz stalwarts Arts for Arts, however, usually charge such low prices — often nothing — that even when they hike the ticket prices up for a fundraiser, the $60 minimum entry fee is actually worth it in itself, considering the stellar array of Free Jazz players they’ve assembled.

This series of Latine art music concludes. Raquel Acevedo Klein is of course a familiar figure on the NYC Alt Classical scene with her vocal music. Pauchi Sasaki does interdisciplinary multimedia works (the first piece of hers I saw/heard was a composition for two electronic dresses) that are a lot more consonant than you think they’re going to be (take that as you will). Akram Khan started as a Kathak dancer and then began to incorporate European Modern-into-Post-Modern and a lot other stuff as well. Maybe too much stuff? I always wish I liked his work more. Lately he’s been tinkering with classics, which creates its own kind of interest. So this reimagination by this Bangladeshi-British artist of a Colonialist interpretation of India is compelling at least in theory.

A performance of Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps, one of the best pieces of Western chamber music written in the last century — maybe the best. A piece so moving, so utterly affecting, so shot full of mystery that even people who think they don’t like new music (and this piece is so new it was written in a Nazi P.O.W. camp 80 years ago) surprise themselves by loving it.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Daniel Boulud’s purported Lyonnais Bouchon Le Gratin is more boring than it should be — but better than it could have been.

So John Cage had conceived of this Noh-Opera (subtitled The Complete Musical Works of Marcel Duchamp) to be staged in Japan. But he never actually wrote (or — this is Cage — “wrote”) it. Now, composer/performer/sound artist Tomomi Adachi hasn't “realized” Cage’s piece but written his own imagination of what a Cage Noh-Opera could be like. Sung by Gelsey Bell, acted by Noh actor Wakako Matsuda, played by wind soloists from the International Contemporary Ensemble.

A panel discussion of the subject matter of Brooke Wentze’s admittedly fascinating-seeming new book about the Downtown performing arts scene in the ‘80s isn’t something we’d List, as we deal with performance around here (although we are pretty curious to see whether the book will address the circumstance that vanguard artists, unlike say laborers, actually did receive the benefits of trickle-down economics in the decade that saw the establishment of the corporatized avant-garde).

This program features, as the promotional materials put it, “singer-songwriters who emerged from the classical tradition” — exactly what we’re about here at The List. Especially when the singer-songwriters are Molly Joyce, Lucy Dhegrae, and (a wild card) (in more ways than one) Dicky Dutton. Kudos to the normally staid NYFOS for putting this great show on.

This is the culmination.

TICKETS + INFORMATION
There are "can a White man sing the blues?" issues with non-Gypsy performers of Gypsy music. But Romanian former child rock star Sanda Weigl's take on Balkan Gypsy music is good the way the early Stones were good: the rhythms, while losing all subtlety, become harder hitting — and the ironic self-awareness Q is through the ceiling. Meaning, it's not anything like as good as the The Real Thing, but it has its strong compensations.

Electronic musician Laurel Halo’s very good new album almost veers into Chamber Pop. Skewed Art Pop to the max. Pinc Louds’s Latinx whatchamacallit is literally ineffable: I couldn’t begin to describe it (although I’ll tell you what: the promotional materials’ attempt with “Tropical Punk” is not on point). LOPEZLOPEZ are of course bassist Brandon Lopez and multidisciplinary artist/electronicist Cecelia Lopez, who don’t think as one only because they have the same last name. And vocalist Isabel Crespo Pardo is an experimental artist with truly broad appeal; wouldn’t it be great if they somehow became popular like, say, Laurie Anderson?

In person Friday in the West Village, Japanese cocktails and snacks at Katana Kitten. Streaming at home on Friday, have a Seven and Seven: pour Seagram’s 7 Crown Whiskey into a Highball glass over ice. Top with 7-Up. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

I’d been sleeping on this magic show (probably its massive mainstream success shielded it from my view). But contrary to how things might appear, just because people like something doesn’t mean it can’t get Listed.

TBH, Bach’s Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord are not my favorite Bach: they seem kind of thin to me compared to, say, the solo Sonatas and Partitas. Which means I just think they’re really good instead of titanically great.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, I’m not gonna even tell you what El Mil Sabores puts on their Torta Loca sandwich. You have to see it for yourself. Streaming at home, have a Bachlyn, I mean Brooklyn (same word): pour 2 oz. Rye, 1 oz. dry Vermouth, and 1/4 oz. each Maraschino liqueur and Amer Picon (since you don’t have Amer Picon, use instead Golden Moon Amer dit Picon, Bigalet China-China, or Amaro Ciociaro) into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.

I can imagine some stick-in-the-mud fuddie duddies finding Gryphon Rue’s trippy pop-Ambient-Minimalism insubstantial. I can only tell them to lighten up. One one of these pieces Rue will be joined by Ka Baird and Qasim Naqvi: is that good enough for you?
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, a new bar around the corner from Roulette! The Little Pig. Streaming at home, have a Vieux Carré: pour 3/4 oz. each of Rye, Cognac, and sweet Vermouth and 1/2 oz. The Joyce pivots from last week’s dark dark Butoh to the exciting uplifting Kyle Marshall. With Marshall you can take the quality of the choreography (and the dancing) for granted, so let me talk about the music he’s setting. One piece has sound contrived live by ace explorer Cal Fish (Jk: THIS). The next takes off from the spiritually transcendent conscious jazz of Alice Coltrane, a past artist who’s especially relevant NOW if anyone is. But Marshall has saved the best for last: an appreciation by List fave Kwami Winfield of the Black roots of Rock and Roll (an African-American music form stolen by Whites so basely and completely that that it’s now treated as a “breakthrough” when a Black American succeeds in playing so-called “Rock” music for a White audience).

By all rights I should love The Ladybug Transistor’s painstaking recreation of 1966-68 Psychedelic Pop (one of my fave styles) (also many of their albums are named after streets in Prospect Park South!). What’s my problem? I think it’s that they don’t sing so good.

MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: Both P.J. Clarke’s and Cafe Fiorello will be open after this show — but only Clarke’s is worth patronizing.
